Choreography
Victor Quijada
Initial PGF Award: Choreography Fellowship, 2010
Prior to his introduction to formal dance and theater at the L.A. County High School for the Arts, Quijada was influenced by Hip Hop culture from a young age. A protégé of Postmodern pioneer Rudy Perez; a dancer in six creations by Twyla Tharp; member of Eliot Feld Ballet (NYC); and a demi-soloist with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal – these experiences further re-shaped his long-standing relationship with Hip Hop. In 2002, after years of exploring dance and theater from urban, classical, and contemporary angles, he formed RUBBERBANDANCE GROUP.
Quijada has created dance for film, video, and televised broadcast. Commissions include Atlanta Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and notably Self Observation Without Judgement for Scottish Dance Theater (National Dance Award for Best Modern Repertory). Recipient of the Peter Darrell Choreography Award (UK), Bonnie Bird North American Award (UK), Choreography in Media Honors, the OQAJ/RIDEAU Prize, and an American Choreography Award nomination; since September 2007, Quijada is Resident Artist of Cinquieme Salle at Place des Arts de Montreal.
