Camille A. Brown
Initial PGF Award: Choreography Fellowship - Modern, 2006
(Dancer, Choreographer) attended Bernice Johnson's Cultural Arts School, Carolyn Devore Dance Studios, LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts, and The Ailey School. She received her B.F.A. in Dance from The North Carolina School of the Arts. Most recently, she was a member of Ronald K. Brown/Evidence (2001-2007) where she had the opportunity to perform the lead role of ‘Mother God’ in Brown’s critically acclaimed work, Grace. She is also a featured dancer in BET Jazz’ documentary on Blueprint of A Lady- a collaboration with Brown and Grammy nominated Jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon. Ms. Brown has also performed works by Dianne McIntyre, Roger C. Jeffrey, Nathan Trice, Bridget L. Moore, Matthew Rushing and Rennie Harris.She was also a guest performer for The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in her work (The Groove To Nobody's Business) during their 50th anniversary season at City Center, Dallas Black Dance Theater's Spring Concert (o9), The Princess Grace Awards Gala (o9), and Broadway Cares (o7) with the cast of The Color Purple- choreographed by Darrell Grand Moultrie.
Ms. Brown has been honored with awards and fellowships that include a 2006 Princess Grace Award in Choreography (the first woman to be given this award), a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Choreography , The Presidential Scholar of the Arts Award in Dance, NFAA Young Artists’ Award, The Helen Tamiris Award, and The Project Next Generation Award. She has been featured in Dance Magazine, Dance Spirit, Marie Claire, Gestures Magazine (China), Expressions Magazine (Italy), Sisterhood Agenda Magazine, and The Joyce Theater's 25th Anniversary Magazine. Ms. Brown has received commissions from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Hubbard Street II, Urban Bush Women, Ailey II, Ballet Memphis, and Philadanco. Her work has been showcased at Sadler's Wells (London, England), The Apollo, The Joyce Theater, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Joyce SoHo, Central Park's Summerstage, Dance Theater Workshop, Symphony Space, Dancenow Festival, New York Fall for Dance Festival (City Center), Danceplace (D.C.) and This Woman’s Work at Aaron Davis Hall (which resulted in her being noted in Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” article). In Jan 2009, her ensemble performed in Dancing From The Heart- the annual benefit produced by Dancer's Responding To AIDS. She also choreographed a duet for Karine Plantadit and Danny Tidwell for The Youth American Grand Prix Gala (City Center)
Future commissions include new works for Dallas Black Dance Theater and Evolve Dance Company. Ms. Brown has served as Adjunct Professor of Dance at Long Island University and Barnard College and has created works for Tisch School of the Arts, Princeton University, Hunter College, The University of The North Carolina School of the Arts, and The Ailey School. She has done National residences for the New Orleans Dance Festival, Philadanco's Summer Intensive, Perry-Mansfield New Works Festival, Earl Mosely's Institute of the Arts, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance's Summer Intensive, The University of Wisconsin (Milwaukee), Howard University, and Georgetown University. Internationally, she has conducted residencies in Italy and Tokyo, Japan.
In 2008, Ms. Brown choreographed dance segments for Saverio Palatella's show (Wholegarment 3D) during New York Fashion Week.
Ms. Brown firmly believes that artists should put their creativity into action. During her season at Joyce SoHo (June 2009). She raised money for Uptown Music Theatre (New Orleans, La) and continues to support organizations around the country
Spirituality is a guiding force in Ms. Brown’s life and work. Her faith in God and love of choreography are evident in her desire to give back to her community through volunteer work as a dance specialist. She has worked for Creedmore Psychiatric Center, Columbia University, and the Derek Jeter Foundation’s Turn2Us program.
Ms. Brown is currently preparing for her season at Jacob's Pillow and shared season at The Joyce Theater with Andrea Miller, Kate Weare, and Monica Bill Barnes in August 2010.
